Top Woodburning Tips for the cold week ahead

Date: 22 January 2013

With a cold week forecast for many, here are our top tips on how to get the most from your Stovax woodburning fire or stove during inclement weather.

1. Ensure that you buy wood logs from a trusted supplier.
We recommend that you purchase your wood logs from a reputable supplier. This will ensure that you buy a high quality fuel, resulting in a more efficient and safe combustion, not to mention a greater heat output for your money. You will also benefit from sound advice on the best size and type of logs for yourwoodburner. For further information, consult your Stovax dealer or the HETAS website. We would also recommend our ‘how to’ video: ‘How to identify good firewood’ on our designated site.

The contemporary chic of Stovax’s woodburning and multi-fuel Riva Vision Medium stove is suitable for modern interiors and is as effective as a more classically styled woodburner.

2. Buy well seasoned logs and keep your logs dry!
Always use well seasoned wood. The definition of this is a moisture content of less than 20% from logs that have been left to dry for at least two years. Stick to this rule and you will benefit from a heat output that is roughly twice that of freshly felled timber. You will also avoid a build-up of tar in your stove’s flue. Invest in a wood moisture metre to assess a suspect log quickly and easily prior to throwing it on the fire.

3. Bring in your supply of wood for that day.
Keep your logs close at hand and ready to burn. Sort wood into kindling and split logs. It is also a good idea to have a ready supply of firelighters or paper to get your fire going. Stovax has a range of traditional & contemporary log holders and baskets to store your wood indoors.

4. Build an effective fire.
Create your perfect fire in no time by following Stovax’s ‘how to’ video: ‘How to light your woodburning fire’. The video demonstrates how and when to lay materials to create optimum burning capacity.
